What is OrgTree.app?
OrgTree.app is a free, no-signup org chart maker. You list your people one per row (name, role, who they report to) and the org chart draws itself, laid out and connected automatically. No dragging boxes, no account required.
Is OrgTree.app free?
Yes. The org chart maker is free with no time limit and no account required. Your work is saved automatically in your browser.
Do I need to sign up to make an org chart?
No. The editor opens ready to use: no account, no email, no trial clock. You only create an account if you later want cloud save and team features, which live on QueryChart.
Do I need to install any software?
No. OrgTree.app runs in the browser on Mac, Windows, Linux, and Chromebook. There is no download, no add-in, and no license required.
Making org charts
How do I make an org chart here?
Type one person per row in the people sheet: their Name, Role, and who they Report To. Leave Reports To blank for the person at the top. The org chart renders and lays itself out in real time as you type.
Can I paste my employee list from Excel or Google Sheets?
Yes. Copy the Name, Department, Role, and Reports To columns (in that order) and paste them into the sheet. Managers can appear on any row; the reporting lines resolve across the whole paste.
Why do names have to be unique?
Because the Reports To column finds each manager by name. Two people with the same name would make every line naming them ambiguous, so a duplicate is refused. Add an initial to tell them apart.
How do departments work?
Set a Department on a person and it colours their card and groups them in the Departments tab. Their reports inherit it unless they name one of their own, so one cell on a department head colours the whole branch.
Can I show open positions or planned hires?
Yes. Add a row for the position and set its Seat to Open role. It is drawn as an empty, dashed seat, and the Stage column tracks how far along hiring is.
Can I show dotted-line reporting?
Yes. Set a person's Reporting line to Dotted and the line coming into them is drawn dashed, for an interim or dotted-line report. It changes the line, not who they report to.
Can I start from a template?
Yes. The template rail beside the chart lists org chart templates by sector. Pick one and it opens as an editable people sheet.
How do I download my org chart?
Create a free QueryChart account from the editor: your org chart moves into your account and you download it as a PNG there. PDF and SVG export are on the QueryChart Team plan.

Where is my org chart saved?
In your browser, automatically: close the tab and come back, it's there. Browser storage is local to this device; for cloud save that follows you across devices, create a free QueryChart account and your org chart moves over.
What happens when I need to share or keep version history?
Those features live on QueryChart, the platform OrgTree.app is built on. Sign up and your local org chart moves into your QueryChart account, where you get cloud save, sharing, team workspaces, and version history.
Is OrgTree.app the same as QueryChart?
No. OrgTree.app is the free maker: people in, org chart out, saved in your browser. QueryChart is the parent platform: cloud save, collaboration, and version history for org charts and process documentation. Same editor engine, different scope.
I had an account on the old orgtree.app. Where are my charts?
OrgTree.app was rebuilt on the QueryChart editor in September 2026. Charts from the previous version are not carried over automatically. Contact support@querychart.io and we will help you recreate them.
How is OrgTree.app related to ProcessMapping.app?
They're sibling free editors built on QueryChart. OrgTree.app draws who reports to whom; ProcessMapping.app draws how the work flows between those teams, as swimlane process maps built from a spreadsheet. Both lead into the same QueryChart account.
