What a department org chart shows

A department chart zooms in on one function, such as finance, IT, HR, sales, or operations. It starts at the department head and shows every manager, team lead, and team member below them, often with more detail than a company-wide chart: specialist roles, open positions, and sub-teams.

Building it from a spreadsheet

Most departments already have their people in a spreadsheet or an HR export. Filter it to the department, copy the name, team, job title, and manager columns, and paste them into the editor's people sheet. The chart builds itself; the department head is whoever has no manager inside the list.

Use the team or sub-department as the Department column so each team gets its own colour.
Make sure manager names match the Name column exactly, since that is how reporting lines are matched.
Add open roles for vacancies so the chart doubles as a headcount plan.

Linking department charts together
