How Tesla is organized
Tesla is a functional company with a very thin top. It reports two financial segments (automotive, and energy generation and storage), but there is no general manager for either; its filings name the CEO himself as the person who allocates resources across them.
Only three people are designated executive officers for a workforce of about 135,000, and there is no chief operating officer, president or chief technology officer. Geography is folded into functional roles: Tom Zhu holds both the Asia-Pacific region and global vehicle manufacturing, and Joe Ward runs EMEA while also leading global sales, service and delivery.
When leaders leave, Tesla tends to fold their teams into an existing branch rather than hire a replacement. The Optimus robot programme moved into Ashok Elluswamy's AI group in 2025, which is why the chart shows AI software and Optimus engineering side by side.
What your own org chart can borrow from Tesla
- A functional structure keeps a fast-moving company simple: one leader per discipline, all reporting to the top.
- If a leader covers a region and a global function at once, write both in their title so the chart explains the overlap.
- Plan for the risk of a thin top: with no COO, the CEO's span of control is the bottleneck, so keep an eye on how many functions report to one person.
- Note programme leads (like the Tesla Semi director) under the function that owns them, so cross-cutting projects still have a home on the chart.
Edit the Tesla org chart
The template is a list of people, not a drawing. Each row has a name, a title, a department and the person they report to, and the org chart is laid out from those rows. Change a Reports To cell and that person's whole branch moves with them; add a row marked as an open role to plan a hire; recolour a branch by changing its department.
Many readers open a company chart to borrow its shape rather than its names: keep the Tesla structure, replace the people with your own team, and the layout follows.
Sources and accuracy
Tesla publishes no leadership page. This chart is an independent reconstruction from SEC filings, earnings-call participant lists and press reporting, as of August 2026. Only Elon Musk, Vaibhav Taneja and Tom Zhu are designated executive officers; the lines below them are inferred from each person's role, and functions with no publicly known leader are left out.
