How Microsoft is organized

Microsoft is run as one company, not a group of divisions. Its three financial segments have no executive in charge of them, and every product is sold by a single commercial organization under Judson Althoff rather than by its own sales force.

The product side is split among many leaders who all report to Nadella. When Rajesh Jha retired as head of Experiences and Devices in March 2026, his organization was divided four ways instead of being handed to one successor, which widened the CEO's span of control. Four people inside Microsoft now carry a CEO title (commercial business, Microsoft AI, Microsoft Gaming and LinkedIn) and all four report to the one Chairman and CEO.

According to press reporting, Microsoft replaced its long-standing Senior Leadership Team during fiscal 2026 with a small corporate leadership group and a larger group of engineering leaders who coordinate with each other directly. Microsoft has not confirmed either body officially.

What your own org chart can borrow from Microsoft

  • If one team sells every product, put it under one leader and keep it out of the product branches, as Microsoft does with its commercial business.
  • Give internal leaders a CEO title when they run something close to a company of its own (LinkedIn, Gaming), while keeping the single reporting line to the top.
  • When a large organization loses its leader, consider splitting it among existing leaders rather than backfilling, and redraw the chart to check the CEO's span stays manageable.
  • Group a wide first level into columns (corporate functions, sales, platforms, AI, products) so a chart with 16 direct reports stays readable.

Edit the Microsoft org chart

The template is a list of people, not a drawing. Each row has a name, a title, a department and the person they report to, and the org chart is laid out from those rows. Change a Reports To cell and that person's whole branch moves with them; add a row marked as an open role to plan a hire; recolour a branch by changing its department.

Many readers open a company chart to borrow its shape rather than its names: keep the Microsoft structure, replace the people with your own team, and the layout follows.

Sources and accuracy

Microsoft publishes no org chart. This one is assembled from Microsoft's leadership page, its fiscal 2026 annual report and its 2025 and 2026 leadership announcements. Only six people shown are named as executive officers in the filing; several lines below the CEO are reconstructed rather than stated. Executive turnover at Microsoft was high in 2025 and 2026, so treat the roster as dated August 2026.
