How Amazon is organized

Amazon runs its two largest businesses almost like separate companies. AWS and Worldwide Amazon Stores each have a CEO with a full profit and loss and their own layer of senior vice presidents. Smaller businesses, from devices to video to Zoox, report to Jassy directly.

Finance, legal, people and security stay central. The clearest example on the chart is John Felton: he is the CFO of AWS, but he reports to Amazon's CFO, Brian Olsavsky, not to the AWS CEO. Even the most independent part of Amazon does not own its own finance team.

The chart also includes a role most companies do not have: the technical advisor to the CEO, a senior engineer who shadows the chief executive for a fixed term. Andy Jassy once held that role under Jeff Bezos. In December 2025 Amazon moved frontier AI research, custom chips and quantum computing into one group under Peter DeSantis, reporting straight to Jassy.

What your own org chart can borrow from Amazon

• Separate the businesses that need speed (each with its own leader and numbers) from the functions that need consistency (finance, legal, people).
• Draw a business-unit finance lead under the central CFO with a dotted line to the business, as Amazon does with AWS, when you want finance to stay independent.
• Use the chart to plan delayering: Amazon set a target to raise the ratio of individual contributors to managers by at least 15 percent, which shows up as wider, flatter branches.
• List advisory or rotation roles explicitly. A seat like the CEO's technical advisor is easy to forget and important for succession planning.

Edit the Amazon org chart

The template is a list of people, not a drawing. Each row has a name, a title, a department and the person they report to, and the org chart is laid out from those rows. Change a Reports To cell and that person's whole branch moves with them; add a row marked as an open role to plan a hire; recolour a branch by changing its department.

Many readers open a company chart to borrow its shape rather than its names: keep the Amazon structure, replace the people with your own team, and the layout follows.

Sources and accuracy

Amazon publishes its senior leadership roster with exact titles, but not an org chart. Several reporting lines below the CEO are the usual reading of public announcements rather than statements Amazon has made, and the chart stops well above the operating layers. It shows the structure as of August 2026.
